Working at the University

The International Services Office (ISO) provides services to the international students, scholars, employees, and other visitors to the University of Rochester, as well as the departments that host and support them.  ISO is responsible for assisting all U of R departments and internationals with immigration related information and services. ISO is the primary liaison and contact with Department of Homeland Security, The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Department of State, United States Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Department of Labor (pertaining to the Labor Certifications for international employees).

To reduce the University’s and employing departments’ risk, all University departments must work with the ISO when immigration services related to international students, scholars, employees and other visitor are required. The use of outside counsel for U of R-based immigration matters must be approved beforehand through consultation with the ISO.

Nonimmigrant Classifications Sponsored by the University

The government labels each nonimmigrant classification or status with a letter of the alphabet. Each one is temporary and for specific purpose and length of time. The most commonly used nonimmigrant classifications at the University of Rochester are: F-1 for full-time students, J-1 for Exchange Visitors, H-1B for Temporary Workers in a Specialty Occupation, and TN for Canadian citizens.
