Temporary Workers

The International Services Office (ISO) provides services to the international students, scholars, employees and other visitors to the University of Rochester, as well as the departments that host and support them.

ISO is responsible for assisting all University departments and internationals with immigration-related information and services. We are the primary liaison and contact with the:

  • Department of Homeland Security
  • United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
  • Department of State
  • United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP)
  • Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
  • Department of Labor (pertaining to the Labor Certifications for international employees)

To reduce the University’s and employing departments’ risk, all University departments must work with the ISO when immigration services are required as related to international students, scholars, employees and other visitors.

All departments hosting scholars, employees or other visitors, please submit our Visa Sponsorship Form so that we can provide you with the correct ISO advisor.

The use of outside counsel for University-based immigration matters must be approved beforehand through consultation with the ISO.

Nonimmigrant Classifications Sponsored by the University

The government labels each nonimmigrant status (or "classification") with a letter of the alphabet. Each one is temporary and for specific purpose and length of time.

The University will occasionally use an O-1 classification for individuals with extraordinary ability in the areas of science, art, education, business or athletics.
