Scams Continue to Impact International Students

In the past two months, UR students have been scammed out of over $140,000.00.  Scammers are people who will try to take advantage of you for their own financial gain.  Common scams include but are not limited to:

  •  Employment opportunities that involve payment as an onboarding fee
  •  Threats of deportation if money is not wired to and unfamiliar bank account
  •  People posing as Federal Officers from the US or your home country who threaten your family if you do not pay them
  •  Anyone requesting money, gift cards, or personal information
  •  People calling about allegedly shipping things illegally

If you are approached in-person, or via email, phone, or text and asked to provide a stranger with any personal information, contact the UR Department of Public Safety at 275-3333 or http://www.publicsafety.Rochester.edu/
